a father who looked out and cared for me
who’d play football 
and laugh along with me

I can only imagine
a father who walked with me
who stood by my right side
and never neglected me

a father who would guide me
who’d be there to talk and listen
and sing with me

a father who taught me things
who was very gentle 
and patient with me

I can only imagine
a father who took joy in me
who encouraged 
and not made fun of me

I can only imagine
a father who hugged me
showed me how to be
and smiled down on me

a father who was kind
who accepted me
and let me be me
